An optometrist is a primary eye care provider who performs comprehensive eye exams, prescribes glasses and contact lenses, and diagnoses and treats common eye conditions.
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in eye and vision care. In addition to providing eye care, ophthalmologists can diagnose and treat more complex eye conditions and perform eye surgery.
Both play an important role in caring for your eyes. If you need specialized or surgical care, your optometrist can help determine whether a referral to an ophthalmologist is appropriate.
